Carson Bruener Had Arguably His Best Game As a Husky

Carson Bruener had some great games for the University of Washington football team throughout his career.

Three years ago, he made his first Husky start as a redshirt freshman at Stanford and made 16 tackles, including a sack and a half and a forced fumble, in a 20-13 win at Palo Alto and was named to the Pac-12 . Defensive Player of the Week.

Last season, the junior receiver from Woodinville, Washington, and the son of former Husky and NFL tight end Mark Bruener, racked up 14 tackles on consecutive weekends, and he did it in two different and highly creative ways: one at Oregon State. as a starter and as a backup against Washington State in the Apple Cup.

But Bruener, who beat USC 26-21 on Saturday night, has never been better in 48 UW games, including 15 starts. He finished with a game-high 12 tackles, nearly double that of anyone playing on either end, and came up with 2 interceptions and a pair of pass breakups.

“Carson Bruener had a great game,” UW coach Jedd Fisch said, calling the collective defensive effort the best of the season.

Bruener’s second interception, especially in the third quarter, helped shift the momentum of the game after the Huskies trailed 21-20 and USC moved the ball and reached midfield looking for more.

Miller caught a bounce pass from Moss and returned it 16 yards to the Trojans’ 39. Eight plays later, the Huskies scored the game-winning touchdown on a jet sweep on a 4-yard run by Keith Reynolds.

With two interceptions against USC, Bruener now has 3 this season, one more than team leader, senior safety Kamren Fabiculan, as each player leaves the interview room, noting the other’s pass-stealing contributions. He has now thrown 5 interceptions in his career; That’s not bad for someone who doesn’t always play as a defensive linebacker.

Best game ever?

“Maybe,” Bruener said. “I didn’t really look. When we watch the movie from start to finish, I can watch what I did wrong, what I did right and correct myself and see what I graded. Right now, I feel like I’m acting pretty good.”

No one objects to this assessment.
