New Delhi: Two people suffocated to death after a massive fire broke out at a furniture warehouse in West Delhi’s Kirti Nagar area in the early hours of Sunday, officials said. They said the two were sleeping in a room on the god’s terrace where the fire started.

An official from Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said, “A call was received at around 4.25 am on Sunday regarding a fire in a furniture cupboard and six fire engines were sent to the spot. Two persons were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.” he said. Police said the fire broke out on the terrace of the building.

In the police statement, “The building was thoroughly checked and it was seen that a room on the terrace was locked from the inside. The teams broke open the door and found two people inside. These people were taken to the hospital, where they were determined to be dead.” The statement was included.

The two men, laborer Atul Rai (45) and rickshaw puller Nand Kishor (65), were declared dead at the hospital. Rai was working in the godhead and sleeping there. Prima facie it was said that they died due to asphyxiation. A forensic team was called to determine the cause of the fire. Police said legal action would be taken accordingly.
