Two teenagers died in a violent two-car crash in Riverside Saturday morning, police said.

After learning of the crash, officers were dispatched to Wood Road near Van Buren Boulevard around 5:40 a.m., according to a statement from the Riverside Police Department.

They saw that one of the cars caught fire in the accident.

Riverside Fire Department crews who were called to the scene also managed to extinguish the flames and discovered two of the three teenagers inside dead.

Police investigators say the gray Lexus was traveling northbound on Wood Road at a high rate of speed when the driver ran a red light at Van Buren Boulevard.

At the same time, a blue Scion was traveling westbound through the intersection at Van Buren with a green light.

Police said after the two-car collision, the Lexus continued traveling north, striking a concrete utility pole, a wooden utility pole and a tree, then catching fire.

It was determined that the 17-year-old male driver and the 18-year-old female passenger died at the scene. The 17-year-old male passenger was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

None of the deceased victims have yet been identified.

The driver and sole passenger of the Scion were not injured in the crash and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation, police said.

They believe that in addition to speed, alcohol and drugs can also cause accidents.
