The youths had followed them from Grand Central Mall before encountering Ali and his friend in Victoria Square.

The defendants, wearing Covid-style masks, had asked the couple a week earlier if they knew who had “jumped over one of their partners”. This led to a falling out, with Ali telling the couple he didn’t know what they were talking about. At that moment, one of them took out a large knife, stabbed Ali in the chest and fled the scene.

In his statement, the 15-year-old boy told the court that he only wanted to “scare” Ali and his friend and that he did not intend to seriously harm or kill anyone. He stated that he carried a knife when he went to crowded places for protection because he had been attacked many times before, and that he felt “regret and sadness” when he learned that he had killed Ali.

The other young man told police he was “shocked and crying” after the incident. He claimed he didn’t know his friend had a knife on him until he pulled it out. He also said that he had never seen his friend Ali before and only went with the killer in case he was “hit”.

Michael Ivers KC, representing the defendant, said he was remorseful and prayed regularly for Ali and his family. He is not a man who is in any way proud of what happened.
