Michigan’s Sherrone Moore easily loses challenge against Oregon

play

michigan football Tight end Colston Loveland started the fourth quarter just ahead of head coach Sherrone Moore by catching a third-and-8 pass against Oregon, but the play was ruled incomplete.

Fans at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor booed, but Moore later defied the call on the field. Although Loveland had one foot on the ground, he was unable to survive the ground due to the ball being jarred when it hit the sideline around Michigan’s 36-yard line. Wolverines’ eventual 38-17 loss.

Confirmation of the call on the field after a quick review led longtime CBS color commentator Gary Danielson to say:

“This is just a mistake from the Michigan team. They don’t know the rule and it cost them a timeout.

“They just don’t understand the rule.”

Michigan lost a key timeout and trailed 31-17 with 14:49 left, before one timeout remained because there were too many men on the field.

Danielson also said someone “upstairs” in the Michigan press room should have told Moore not to challenge after seeing the replay.

wolverines The defense stepped up to force a punt, giving Michigan a new set of downs with 12:23 to play. Wolverines are on the road ducks‘ at the 10-yard line, but was stopped on downs after a botched trick play on a putback to backup quarterback Alex Orji with 7:24 left.

“I thought Davis Warren won the toss,” Danielson said. “He didn’t get a third down (Kalel Mullings 2-yard run). And I thought the way he played he deserved either a third down or a fourth down. That’s my opinion.”

“I agree with you,” play-by-play partner Brad Nessler said.

In the third quarter, Michigan committed a penalty lined up over long snapper in a strange punt formation, giving the Ducks an automatic first down. He then got a second tackle on the drive, was tackled on defense and was intercepted with too many men on the field.

“That person was actually on the coaching staff, it was a bad decision to make a substitution there,” Danielson said.

Oregon gained a field goal en route to a 31-17 lead.
