Smith’s 25-yard TD pass in overtime helped Morgan State beat Norfolk State 38-37

BALTIMORE, MD. (AP) — Tahj Smith hit Jaden Coffen with a 25-yard touchdown pass in overtime in Saturday afternoon’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown and Morgan State denied Norfolk State’s two-point conversion to preserve a 38-37 lead.

Sahr Gbundema, who scored the crucial extra point in overtime, hit a 47-yard field goal with 22 minutes left in regulation to tie the game at 31 and force overtime.

Norfolk State (3-7, 1-2) led 24-3 entering the second quarter, but Smith’s nine-yard strike to Andre Crawley in the final minute of the first half made the score 24-16 at halftime.

Myles Miree hit a 1-pointer late in the third quarter to give Morgan State a 24-22 lead at two after Smith’s attempt to convert a two-pointer fell incomplete. Jadon Carter blocked a Norfolk State field goal attempt 77 yards to give the Bears a 28-24 lead to start the fourth quarter. Daniels found Elyja Mitchell with a 10-yard touchdown pass midway through the period to give the Spartans a final lead of 31-28.

Smith completed 19 of 28 pass attempts for 179 yards and completed 38 passes six more times to lead Morgan State (4-5, 1-1).

Daniels led Norfolk State by completing 13 of 18 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns.
