Duquesne holds off Mercyhurst to claim first place in Northeast Conference

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Damarius Perrantes scored twice, JaMario Clements scored twice in the fourth quarter and Duquesne beat Mercyhurst 31-24 on Saturday to move into a tie for first place in the Northeast Conference.

The Dukes trailed 10-7 at halftime, but took a 14-10 lead in the third quarter with Perrantes’ 64-yard touchdown pass to Joey Isabella. Mercyhurst responded with Adam Urena’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Rylan Davison to regain the lead, followed by Duquesne’s field goal going into the fourth at the 17.

Clements’ 8-yard field goal gave the Dukes a 24-17 lead, then his 86-yard field goal turned into two touchdowns late in the quarter.

The Lakers scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Adam Urena to Cameron Barmore to make it 31-24, but Duquesne recovered the ensuing onside kick and escaped the final minute and a half.

Duquesne (6-2, 4-0) joins Robert Morris atop the NEC standings. The Colonials played a non-conference game on Saturday.

The Dukes’ sixth straight win was their longest since the team’s six straight wins in 2018.
