Brainerd coach accused of abusing child

Clara J. Meyer, 21, of Brainerd, is charged with soliciting a child to engage in sexual conduct and soliciting a child in person or via computer, a misdemeanor.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the parents of a 15-year-old girl on Aug. 20 after detecting sexually explicit text messages with Meyer. In her statement to a sheriff’s investigator, her daughter said she and Meyer discussed their mutual feelings for each other and began an affair. According to the report, Meyer is a basketball coach. Following the search warrant, the investigator found thousands of electronic messages, including nude photos, between Meyer and the teen on the teen’s cell phone.

Meyer refused to give a statement to the investigator.

The first hearing is planned to be held on November 4.

Brandenburg charged with failing to register as a sex offender for the fourth time

David A. Brandenburg, 43, of Nevis, is charged with failure to register as a predatory offender. Due to a conviction for criminal sexual conduct, Brandenburg is required to register any changes to his primary address five days before moving out. He is also on probation/parole by the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC).

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Sept. 25, a DOC agent notified a Hubbard County sheriff’s investigator that an arrest warrant had been issued for Brandenburg. The agent said Brandenburg left a voicemail saying he had been kicked out of his home in Hubbard County.

The investigator obtained a surveillance warrant seeking electronic location data on Brandenburg, the report states. Brandenburg is in the Whipholt area of ​​Cass County, Pings said.

On Oct. 2, a concerned citizen spotted Brandenburg’s vehicle at a residence on U.S. Hwy. A search warrant was executed in Hubbard County with the assistance of the 71st Lake District SWAT team, but Brandenburg was not there. A second search was conducted on October 3. Witnesses said Brandenburg was staying at a residence on Rocky Point Road in Cass County. Brandenburg was taken into custody later that day.

A review of Brandenburg’s criminal history reveals convictions dating back to 2003 in Wadena, Beltrami, Cass and Hubbard counties, including criminal damage to property, terroristic threats, criminal sexual conduct, two counts of domestic assault, eluding and three counts of failure to register.

An omnibus hearing is scheduled for December 2.

Bemidji man charged with multiple DWI

Christopher A. King, 38, of Bemidji, is charged with two counts of felony DWI, one count of felony possession of buprenorphine and one count of driving contrary to public safety after a revocation.

According to probable cause, a Hubbard County sheriff’s deputy was on routine patrol of a public area in Lake George around 1:33 p.m. on Oct. 24 when he approached the driver of a white Chevy Impala. The driver, identified as King, did not have a valid driver’s license.

The deputy observed marijuana marijuana on the dashboard and learned that King’s license had been revoked. The deputy could smell alcohol on King, according to the report. The deputy administered field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test to King, resulting in an alcohol concentration of 0.135. The king was arrested.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies located a metal grinder containing approximately 2.19 grams of marijuana and a beer can on the rear floor of the car. At the jail, multiple strips of buprenorphine, a Schedule III controlled substance, were found on King.

A review of King’s criminal history reveals prior convictions for assault, DWI and eluding with a motor vehicle, all in Beltrami County, between 2015 and 2024.

Three aggravated assault charges against Cass Lake man

Dillon L. Neeland, 31, of Cass Lake, is charged with second-degree aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, aggravated domestic assault, fourth-degree aggravated assault on a peace officer and gross misdemeanor obstruction of legal process.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Oct. 22, a Hubbard County sheriff’s deputy responded to a domestic assault at a residence near Cass Lake. Neeland’s mother reported that he hit her in the face with a closed fist. Officers observed swelling around his jaw, redness, fresh bruising, as well as minor abrasions on his forearm. According to the report, Neeland was observed in the bedroom and was informed that he was under arrest, but there was no response. After a search warrant was obtained, Neeland was handcuffed and taken to a squad car. The report states he tried to take items from deputies and kicked patrol cars. After receiving medical clearance at the hospital, Neeland grabbed the deputy’s shirt collar as he was being loaded into the squad car. The report states that the lawmaker broke Neeland’s dominance.

A review of Neeland’s criminal history reveals convictions for terroristic threats in Beltrami County in May 2024, fifth-degree assault in Hubbard County in September 2021, and criminal sexual assault in Beltrami County in December 2014.

Nevis woman accused of hiding criminal in fake kitchen cupboard

Georgette K. Rogers, 52, of Nevis, is charged with aiding a convicted felon on probation/parole.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Oct. 21, Hubbard County sheriff’s sergeants, a deputy and an investigator served foreclosure papers on all residents of a residence on Nevis. The report states Rogers was known to live at the same address as Kelly Keezer, who had an active felony arrest warrant in Hubbard County.

The report stated that Rogers denied Keezer’s claim that he was at the home and did not allow law enforcement to enter. After obtaining a search warrant, a deputy found a fake cabinet in the kitchen where Keezer was hiding.

The report states that Keezer was placed on probation in December 2021 and an arrest warrant was issued for him on July 11, 2022.

The first appearance is scheduled for November 4.

Refusal to submit test results on felony charge

Kevin J. Bruce, 38, of Park Rapids, is charged with DWI, refusal to submit to chemical testing, and gross misdemeanor driving contrary to public safety after revocation.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Aug. 31 around 6:28 p.m., a Hubbard County sheriff’s sergeant spotted a Subaru Impreza on 129th Street with no license plate and three inoperative brake lights. After activating the emergency lights, the sergeant saw the Impreza pass through three intersections without stopping. The car stopped on County Road 28.

Bruce was identified as the driver. The report states that the sergeant observed that his pupils were constricted, his eyes were watering, his skin was moist, and his mouth was like cotton. Bruce refused to take field sobriety tests. He was arrested. According to the report, during a search of the vehicle, unpackaged raw marijuana as well as two bent spoons with burn marks were found. The spoons tested positive in the field for methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance. Bruce refused to provide a blood or urine sample to the Hubbard County Jail.

Bruce’s driving privileges were revoked on February 2, 2024. He had three previous driving revocations in the last 10 years.

A review of criminal history reveals pending felony charges for fifth-degree controlled substance and second-degree DWI, as well as convictions for domestic assault and 911 intervention in April 2020, and DWIs in 2007 and 2008.

Nevis man found in possession of firearm with altered serial number

David C. Thomas, 62, of Nevis, is charged with possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, misdemeanor DWI and possession of a handgun while under the influence of alcohol.

According to probable cause, at approximately 1:36 a.m. on Sept. 29, a Hubbard County sheriff’s sergeant observed a white Chevy Silverado “swaying” and crossing the fog line. The driver, identified as Thomas, issued a permit to carry and stated that he had a firearm inside the truck. The report states that the sergeant observed slurred speech and smelled alcohol. Thomas provided a preliminary breath test with a result of 0.157. In the report, the sergeant states that the semi-automatic pistol’s serial number plate was “engraved and scratched.” Thomas told law enforcement that he borrowed the gun from a friend about two or three months ago. He refused to change the serial number. Thomas was arrested.

A review of Thomas’ criminal history reveals a fourth-degree DWI conviction in July 2014.
