Penticton newcomer starts GoFundMe after losing everything in RV crash – Penticton News

Morgan Sugg had only been in Penticton a few days when the brakes on his truck and trailer failed and his home rolled down a mountain road and was completely destroyed.

The accident, which occurred on October 22, not only completely destroyed his home and many of his belongings, but also shattered a femur near his hip.

Sugg said he was staying in the Carmi area with another person and their two dogs.

“We were heading back the next morning because we heard there was a better place to bring your caravan up the road. We’re heading down and as we were going down the hill the brakes failed and it actually just kept going faster and faster,” he added.

He tried to downshift, park the trailer, and pull the emergency brake, but nothing was working.

“Nothing could stop us, and eventually we started tumbling. If we had gone any further, I think we would have been going down a rocky cliff.”

Luckily, a nurse living in the area heard the accident and ran out.

“He was laying there with me because I ended up flying out the window,” Sugg added. “I think I was in front of the wreck, then my dog landed on top of the hill, then the person I was with and his dog weren’t actually thrown from the vehicle. So they were fine.”

Sugg was brought to hospital where staff performed emergency surgery and had 33 staples inserted into his leg.

“It could have been a lot worse, multiple people had died on that corner. So it was definitely scary.”

Sugg’s dogs, who spent five days in the hospital to recover, were taken in and cared for by the Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT), which helps care for and rescue pets in emergencies.

“When I got out of the hospital, they helped me with dog food and stuff, because we lost everything that was knocked over.”

Her dog was also taken to the vet, she had a few minor scrapes on her back legs but luckily there was only some bruising other than that.

When the couple returned to the scene of the accident, Sugg said he was only able to get two pairs of pants and a shirt. Everything else was destroyed.

“I just raised enough (money) to get into a hotel room for a few days, until I reached out to different resources and things like that and saw who could help or help us. Longer term, I’m going to try to find a place because I can’t really get around with my leg.”

The couple just moved to this area from Edmonton and unfortunately there isn’t much family around.

Sugg said he started it. You can find the GoFundMe online hereAssisting with medical expenses for rehabilitation, temporary housing and living expenses, replacement of essential items, and transportation as you try to get back on your feet.
