The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned a senior Canadian diplomat on November 1 to lodge a formal protest against Canadian Deputy Minister David Morrison’s allegations regarding India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The allegations emerged during the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security hearings in Ottawa on October 29, 2024, when Morrison made “absurd and unfounded references” to the Shah.

MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was quoted in the diplomatic note submitted to the representative of the Canadian High Commission as saying, “The Government of India has protested in the strongest terms against the absurd and unfounded references made earlier to the Union Home Minister of India.” Committee by Deputy Minister David Morrison.

Jaiswal stressed that such “irresponsible actions” would have “serious consequences for bilateral relations” and signaled India’s serious concerns over the deterioration of diplomatic relations.

Additionally, India has lodged a formal protest with Canada over the ongoing video and audio surveillance of Indian consular officials in Canada, arguing that such actions violate diplomatic norms.

Calling for a more responsible approach by Canadian authorities, he said: “These statements are not only unfounded; “They undermine the trust and cooperation that are essential to our bilateral relationship.”
