Former mayor of Madibeng, Jostina Mothibe, died in a car accident

Mothibe died in a road accident on the R512 in Hartbeespoort on Thursday.

The party’s provincial secretary, Louis Diremelo, announced his death in a statement.

“Comrade MaJos, as he was affectionately known, met his untimely demise after being involved in a horrific accident while driving on the Hartbeespoort State Road (R512),” the statement said.

Diremelo praised the late Mothibe as a true servant of the people whose life can be described as a true revolutionary.

“The passing of Comrade Jostina, with her sharp wit and easy-going humour, has left a huge void in the African National Congress (ANC) and the entire Madibeng community,” he said.

“During his tenure as Executive Mayor, Madibeng made an immeasurable contribution to the Madibeng Local Municipality. His groundbreaking work has solidified accountability, active citizens, and quality service delivery for the benefit of our people,” Diremelo added.

Mothibe was elected mayor of Madibeng local municipality but was sacked by his own party, the ANC, in 2019 following violent service delivery protests.

Despite this, he continued as mayor until he was dismissed with a motion of no confidence in 2021.

Diremelo expressed his condolences to Mothibe’s family and added that details of his funeral will be made public once consultations with his family are completed.

A North West ANC spokesperson was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
