Miami-Dade firefighter whose son was among 3 to resign, killed during training exercise – NBC 6 South Florida

Miami-Dade firefighter whose son died in a crash unauthorized training exercise They were among three employees who resigned in June while the investigation into the fatal fire continued.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed Friday that the resignations of firefighters Franciso A. Camero, Steven Colon and Rafael Fernandez are effective Oct. 30.

The fatal fire occurred June 21 at the three-story building in the 6500 block of Northwest 36th Street in Virginia Gardens.

Camero, a certified EMT, was not assigned to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Even why he participated in the training exercise is being investigated.

The department, along with a group of international firefighters, was training in the building that day, even though its headquarters had a training facility just three miles away.

At the time, the building’s owner told NBC6 they had a verbal agreement with the department to allow them to do “non-destructive” training.

Miami-Dade County Public Safety Chief James Reyes confirmed to NBC6 on Friday that three people resigned following the death of a firefighter’s son during an unauthorized fire rescue training exercise in June.

NBC6 was unable to reach former fire department employees for comment.

We also asked the state fire marshal for an update on their investigation and what it might mean for the three firefighters who resigned. A spokesperson told us they are looking into this.

NBC6 is requesting public records related to this training exercise, as well as incident reports detailing what first responders found at the scene.
