Racing journalist Alastair Down dies aged 68

Highly respected racing journalist Alastair Down was described by the British Horseracing Authority as “a genius with a pen and a peerless broadcaster” following his death at the age of 68.

Down was named racing writer of the year five times for his work on The Sporting Life and Racing Post and was a mainstay of the Channel 4 Racing team.

He recently had the honor of having the Cheltenham press room named after him and was on hand at Prestbury Park for the unveiling.

The BHA shared on X: “A genius with a pen and a peerless publisher, Alastair will be remembered as one of the greatest writers in the history of racing.

“His contribution to the sport was immeasurable and he will be greatly missed on British racing circuits.

“The thoughts of everyone at BHA are with Alastair’s family and friends.”

The Racecourse Association added: “Everyone at the RCA was saddened to hear the news of Alastair Down’s death.

“Throughout a long and successful career, his words brought the best of our sport to countless readers and inspired many new fans and writers.

“We were delighted to see his name honored at @CheltenhamRaces last week.”

Additionally, Down’s former colleague Derek Thompson said of X: “No one can bring racing to life in writing in such a tangible and exciting way.”
