Cedar Springs school employee charged in child porn case

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Cedar Springs Public Schools employee was arraigned on child pornography charges.

Mark Labelle, 35, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material and use of a computer to commit a crime.

Court documents say Kent County sheriff’s deputies received a call from Labelle’s wife on Aug. 24, saying she had seen child pornography on her cell phone. Investigators said they did not find any sexually explicit images of children on his phone, but did find several on his laptop.

According to court documents, Labelle “admitted to being addicted to pornography” during an interview with deputies.

Labelle was arrested Tuesday but has been on administrative leave from Cedar Springs Public Schools since Aug. 26, when he became aware of the investigation. The district said in a letter to families that it did not interact directly with students. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office tells News 8 he was a maintenance worker in the area.

The district added that there is no indication that any Cedar Springs students were involved in the case.

Labelle is expected to appear in court on November 13 for a hearing. Each of the charges he faces are felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
