Ipswich cafe faces closure over drugs and disorder

The venue, owned by Carla Alexandra Melo de Sousa, was described by police as a “serious local problem” with a reputation for drug use and supply.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said it was under investigation after an on-duty police officer was the victim of an attack on October 5 and that the investigation was ongoing.

Sergeant Mason Blanchard was struck in the neck by a staff member while trying to break up a fight involving approximately 10 people.

In his witness statement, he said: “As I caught a man who was thinking about someone else, I felt one arm putting pressure on my throat and another arm wrapping around my waist.

“I was dragged away from the group and pushed back towards one of the cafes, with constant pressure being applied to my upper body and throat.”

The police officer said he used “proportionate and minimal” force to gain control over the man, while members of the public tried to prevent his arrest.
