Nicky Jam Cancels Trump Endorsement After Puerto Rico Controversy

Puerto Rican reggaeton star NickyJam withdrew his support Donald Trump He told his followers on Wednesday that he could no longer stand by the Republican candidate after racist comments Tony Hinchcliffe made at a rally last weekend.

“The reason I supported Donald Trump was because I believed it was what was best for the economy in the United States, where many Latinos live, including myself… there are a lot of immigrants who are suffering because of the state of the economy.” Jam said in Spanish. “Since (Trump) is a businessman, I felt it was the right move.”

Jam had previously appeared at a Trump rally himself; where she was introduced (and misgendered) by the Republican candidate, telling the crowd that she had declared her support for “Latin music superstar Nicky Jam,” saying: “You know Nicky? He’s hot! The musician posed for a photo with Trump onstage.”

In the video he posted Wednesday, Jam said he never expected “a comedian in his life to speak badly and criticize me (Puerto Rico).”

He added: “That is why I am withdrawing my support for Donald Trump and stepping away from any political debate. Puerto Rico deserves respect.”

Podcaster and comedian Hinchcliffe made several racist comments to the crowd at a Trump rally on Sunday, including: “I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally an island of garbage floating in the middle of the ocean. Right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
