A woman and her two young children died after deliberately jumping over the safety rail and jumping into Niagara Falls on Monday. new York State Police.

The apparent murder-suicide occurred around 9 p.m. when 33-year-old Chianti Means took her 9-year-old and 5-month-old child, jumped over the railroad tracks on Luna Island and into the Niagara River. Luna Island is a small island located between American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls and, along with Horseshoe Falls, forms the popular tourist attraction. The island is connected to Goat Island.

Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and determined that they had all gone there.

“The investigation determined that this incident was intentional, but the circumstances remain under investigation,” New York State Police said in a press release.

Authorities are using drones and underwater units to search for three missing people.

As of Thursday, rescuers still had not located any of the bodies. New York State Police Tell Fox News Digital.

New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan said no one else was involved and it was unlikely it was an accident.

“There are a lot of security measures in state parks. So this isn’t something they just randomly stumbled into,” O’Callaghan said at a news conference Wednesday. “This is a small area, right at the top of the falls and we believe that’s where the falls enter here“

Luna Island was open 24 hours a day and it was dark when the incident occurred. Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls that span the border between Canada and New York.

“So what were the actual circumstances of how this incident occurred? That’s the part that we may know or figure out, or may never know. But the fact of the matter is, we don’t believe there were any other parties involved. We’re just talking about three victims of these three individuals.”

O’Callaghan said what witnesses told police was “alarming” but he could not share what they said.

“They definitely went there that night and none of them returned. But as I said, based on the information we have, we know that this was a deliberate act. “But it is more difficult to answer why,” he said.

O’Callaghan said the family of those killed had been very cooperative, allowing police to expedite the investigation. Means was the mother of both children and they had different fathers.

Police also spoke with Means’ co-workers. Means described himself as a domestic violence counselor on his LinkedIn profile.

“We do not see any indication (sanity “I think that would accommodate that kind of high level of stress or mental instability,” O’Callaghan said.
