Happy Halloween!

Now it’s time for candy, costumes and fun. Will you be giving out candy tonight? What will you snack on while celebrating? Personally, I am a chocolate lover. My absolute favorite is Krackel (and Crunch bars) because there’s just something so satisfying about combining that rice crunch with a sweet treat. I’ll also trade in Tootsie Rolls, Twix, Kit-Kats, Snickers, Reese’s… Honestly, I’m not that picky about it. What’s your favorite Halloween candy? Let me know!

event of the week

New documentary ahead of Tuesday’s presidential election American Problemout this week (available on demand), explores the divide in the United States, focusing specifically on two Pennsylvania towns considered particularly important in our swing state: Erie and Hazelton. These areas, former mill and coal towns that have experienced major population shifts in recent decades, served as case studies as director James Kicklighter explored “how the glue that holds Americans together has unraveled and why that threatens the stability of America today.”

Filmed over eight years, the film showcases voters on different sides of various issues sharing their fears and motivations on screen as experts explain how growing intolerance has historically led to the collapse of previous empires. This is also about people in Erie and Hazelton (Detroit is also the third city on this list) organizing to bring people together, like the Hazelton Integration Project. The narrator concludes: “Tolerating our differences is not enough. Without solutions based on the common good, Americans will continue to become angrier. “Those who divide us will continue their dominance over society.”

Biggest takeaways: Meet your neighbors, get involved in local politics, build community, and — you already know this — vote.
