PORTSMOUTH – A man died when he crossed the median and crashed into another car on Interstate 95 Wednesday night, according to New Hampshire State Police. This was the second fatal accident and third serious accident It involves a vehicle crossing the median of I-95 in Beach this month.

“Preliminary investigation determined that a southbound vehicle crossed the median, became airborne, and struck another northbound vehicle,” police said on social media.

The identity of the driver who crossed the median and died was not immediately released. Police said the northbound driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

State Police reported Wednesday night that the crash occurred on I-95 in Portsmouth near mile marker 13 before 7 p.m., and northbound lanes were closed as authorities responded and investigated.

According to police, northbound traffic that was stopped due to the investigation was diverted to Exit 3.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation is considering installing median barriers along Interstate 95 after the fatal Greenland crash, a spokeswoman for the state agency said. Neither potential installation plans nor cost estimates had been finalized.

Two people died and the third person was hospitalized in an accident that occurred on a highway in Greenland on October 16. Police said a northbound driver, later identified as 24-year-old Steven Le of Methuen, Massachusetts, lost control, crossed the median into oncoming traffic, struck a car and later died. The crash also killed southbound driver Leslie Lynn, 58, of Roanoke, Virginia.

Two people were seriously injured in an I-95 crash in Greenland on October 23, when a northbound vehicle crossed the median and crashed into a southbound car.

It was determined last winter that a California woman was the victim of a February I-95 crash near the Portsmouth-Greenland line, when the northbound car lost control, rolled over and ended up in the breakdown lane of the southbound lanes. The driver of the vehicle was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Lane did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday morning.
