Two people were taken to hospital after a senior driver’s car crashed into the side of a petrol station yesterday afternoon.

Anthony Pettit, 83, said he was refueling his car at the Rubis East Broadway Service Station in Pembroke when his car suddenly “accelerated” and crashed into the building.

Mr Pettit said: “This is the first accident I’ve had in fifty-odd years.”

He was speaking after his wife and a service station worker were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Mr Pettit said he and his wife went to the gas station around 1pm to refuel and have the tires checked for air leaks.

He said that while he was heading towards the road after his vehicle was serviced, he suddenly accelerated and crashed into the wall.

Mr. Pettit said his wife, who was in the vehicle, later complained of chest pains and was treated by ambulance.

He described the incident as “very frustrating”, admitting that he felt fine but “embarrassed”.

Mr Pettit said: “I hate to be the cause of any pain.”

Police and other emergency personnel were called to the service station around 1:20 p.m.

A police spokesman confirmed that an employee in the building was injured and was treated by ambulance.

The spokesman did not give information about the extent of her injuries, but it was understood that the woman’s foot needed treatment.

Investigations into the incident continue.

The owner of the service station said further evaluation of the building is needed before deciding when to reopen the station.
