This was the best scene in the Agatha All Along finale and it’s not even close

Agatha All Along Episode 9 It brought an end to the adventures of Agatha Harkness and Billy Maximoff (or is it Kaplan) on Witches Lane.

unlike others marvel showsbut this wasn’t an action-packed, flashy finale, complete with unnecessary cameos that make up the next 52 episodes in the ever-expanding MCU.

Instead it was something much more intimate, and the showrunner Jac Schaeffer used the finale to reveal more of Agatha’s backstory, shedding some light on who she was before she became the evil witch of Westview. As you might expect, Agatha spent most of her teenage days stealing magic from other witches, but the biggest surprise of the episode was just how devoted a mother Agatha was to her son. Nicholas Scratchaka Nicky.

We were led to believe that Agatah was a cruel mother who traded her son to Mephisto in exchange for the power of the Darkhold, but the truth behind Nicky’s death was more heartbreaking than we expected and gave us the best scene of the series. .

Nicholas Scratch

Nicholas Scratch's death scene in Agatha All Along Episode 9

But before we get to that, we need to understand some context around Nicholas’s birth. It turns out that poor little Nicky wasn’t actually of this world and was supposed to die in childbirth. Rio (Lady Death to you and me), but out of love for Agatha he allowed the child to live.

Agatha and Nicky spend the next six years traveling across America, killing witches, raising goats, and composing a great song (down, down, down, we’re going!). Basically everyone is having a good time; until one evening, while Agtha was sleeping, Nicky woke up to find Rio waiting for her and finally took her away.

And then we see the best scene of the show. In the morning, Agatha learns that her beloved son has died. There are no spectacular duels with Mephisto’s minions, no witty barbs, or daring battles against unknown cosmic forces. Nicky slipped away at night while Agatha lay next to him.

It’s a heartbreaking moment and surprisingly realistic. Anyone who has experienced death knows that most of the time it doesn’t happen the way movies teach us. There aren’t always bedside vigils, tears of pain or touching last words. Some people just fall asleep and never wake up.

We all need more time

For a Marvel show – I love the MCU, but let’s be honest, subtle drama has never been its strong suit – to pull off such a raw moment of drama, especially in a series as goofy and campy as Agatha All Along, was truly amazing.

Of course, it helps to have an actor as talented as Kathryn Hahn playing Agatha, and she did a beautiful job in that moment. It’s not overcooked or saccharine. This is nothing more than the desperate screams of a woman – used to feeling powerful and superior to everyone else – trying to wake up her son, knowing that despite all her magic, she cannot bring him back.

That’s why I loved this scene and I think it’s the best moment in the series. It so sums up what Agatha All Along is all about. It sums up the universal need we feel to be close to those we’ve lost, how many of us use grief to push us to do the impossible, and the tragic reality that grief can push us to do the unthinkable.
