Let the Juan Soto sweepstakes begin.

After the New York Yankees lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, all eyes are now on the slugger’s upcoming free agency. He was asked about his mindset heading into the offseason after Wednesday’s Game 5 and didn’t close the door on any team.

“I think every team has the same opportunities when I enter free agency,” Soto told reporters.

He was also asked specifically about the New York Mets and repeated these words: “I don’t know what teams will come after me. I will definitely be open to that and every team. I have no doors closed, I will be available for all 30 teams.”

Yankees teammate Aaron Judge expressed hope that Soto would return to the Bronx Bombers, saying: “It was definitely lucky to have him here and it would be great to continue playing with him because he’s definitely a special player.”

Although Soto has kept his options open with his comments, the reality is that not every team will be able to compete to sign him.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers He noted that Shohei Ohtani probably won’t reach the $700 million deal he received from the Dodgers last season, but he will still sign a contract that will “definitely be rich.”

Soto was even asked if he could sign a deal worth over $600 million, to which he responded: “There’s a lot of money that people are talking about here and there, but we’ll definitely handle it.”

There are only a handful of teams in the league that would agree to such a deal for a single player, and two teams in New York are likely on the list.

After all, the Mets and Yankees were at the top of the league 2024 payrolls Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and Dodgers are in the top five. The Mets seem to make sense as a potential destination, as they already know New York and could provide the missing piece to help them take the next step after reaching the National League Championship Series.

Pete Alonso is also set to become a free agent soon, meaning they could be in the market for another bulky player if the powerful hitter leaves.

They also fit in as a team in the middle of the winning bracket, which Soto said is important.

“I think everyone wants to be on a winning team,” he said. “That’s one of the biggest things you look up to. You want to be a part of it. Even if you don’t make it to the last team standing, you want to be involved in all of these (games), so I think that’s one of the biggest things I look for.”

Soto is one of the rare generation of superstars who hit free agency in the midst of his peak numbers at the age of 26. He already has a list of accomplishments that includes a World Series title, a batting title, four Silver Sluggers and four All-Star Game nominations, and he was excellent for the Yankees last season.

He slashed .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs, 109 RBIs and a league-best 128 runs batted in, and then hit .327 with four home runs in 14 postseason games as New York reached the World Series.

The next team that signs him could keep him for more than a decade. To hear him tell it, it could be any team.
