Manor community shocked after fatal stabbing at high school

MANOR, Texas Manor The community is shocked and wants answers after the fatal stabbing at Manor High School.

Tuesday morning, Manor ISD said: A student stabbed another student at Manor High School. Manor police say the 18-year-old suspect stabbed the victim in the chest with a kitchen knife.

A video showing the stabbing and its aftermath was sent to the school.

“It really concerned me that everyone was sharing these videos and posting them on their Instagram stories, you know, look this kid got stabbed and they’re showing me pictures and videos of him lying on the ground and there’s blood,” said student Jaylen Jackson.

Suspect Mac Brown Bbah Mbanwei, 18, was arrested and charged with murder.

The victim, 18-year-old Darrin Loving, died from his injuries.

As hard as it is to admit, Jaylen’s mother, Teki Herrod, shared, “I’m not that surprised these days, it’s even scarier to have to say it or admit it.”

The incident also brought security on campus to the agenda.

“My concern will always be for his personal safety. So from now on we’re going to have these unfortunate conversations about what safety is going to look like for him at school,” Herrod said.

Manor ISD says the school has extensive security protocols, including designated campus police officers and trained security personnel.

There were two district police officers and a security guard on campus at the time of the incident.

Although handheld metal detectors are not currently used on a daily basis, the district says they can be used for random screening if deemed necessary.

Harrod says it’s all about checking in on her child’s mental health now.

“It’s really sad that we have to have these conversations. It’s like every day we hear about violence in schools. So I want to make sure he knows what he needs to do to be prepared.” said Herrod.

Sarah Giacalone is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist. She focuses on anxiety and depression in children, which she says are a big part of trauma.

‘Trauma changes us in different ways. One of the ways is that it really disrupts the idea that we can be safe and fair a lot of the time, especially in certain environments,” Giacalone said.

Even though it’s a difficult subject, she says her advice to parents is: “Listening, asking some open-ended questions, sharing, even showing some sensitivity about what parents might be experiencing or what society is showing as well.”

School will be closed for the remainder of the week for students at Manor Senior High School, Manor Early College High School and Manor High School.

Staff will receive advice and training on how to support students as they return to school on Monday 4 November.

The district said it has been reviewing its security protocols since Tuesday and is looking at additional measures that could include enhanced screening procedures, increasing security personnel staffing and providing additional training to staff and students on de-escalating conflicts.
