Fabio Quartararo will use a new engine in the MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix that he said was “clearly much better” when tested.

Working under concession rules, Yamaha has been relentless in developing the M1 in 2024, with a number of key new parts being introduced to races throughout the season.

Quartararo will have a new engine to race in this weekend’s Malaysian GP and it looks set to give him a bit more power.

“It’s hard to expect things when you arrive at a track now,” he told media, including Crash.net, in Sepang on Thursday.

“In the past, we more or less knew: ‘This is good, this is not so good.’

“But at the moment we have no idea and the thing is we have new things to try this weekend. We have a new engine.

“For my part, I want to test different things in electronics. I have wanted to try something different in my driving style for a long time.

“But I have to try something, the bike has to give me something different. So we’re going to make a pretty big change in the electronics.

“Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s bad; I don’t know. “But I don’t think we’re in a position to at least think about a specific outcome and try something big that could help us a lot.”

He added: “I tested it but only for a few laps and I had a problem with the electronics and it wasn’t working properly.”

“Alex (Rins) tested it and obviously it looked much better. My feeling wasn’t bad either.

“Normally it would be more powerful because Alex and I have different engines and mine was always less powerful.

“That’s what I liked the most, I hope this one is stronger.

“To be honest, when I tested it, I didn’t feel much different because we had a problem with the electronics.

“And we had lots and lots of things to test. So I don’t remember exactly, but it seems to give us more power and on the outside you’ll see that we’ve introduced a new exhaust… so ‘new’.

“We put it on, we take it off, we put it on, we take it off. So we will use this over the weekend.”

Quartararo wasn’t sure how many engines he has tried this season but currently believes there are “four or five”.

The 2021 world champion showed good pace at last week’s Thai GP, where he finished sixth, and set a strong pace in the grand prix despite losing early to Franco Morbidelli.
