A state trooper was shot and wounded late Wednesday on the Southern State Parkway near Malverne, and the shooter was released, according to New York State Police.

The officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to State Police spokeswoman Trooper Brittany Burton.

He said the vehicle the gunman was driving was a black Dodge Charger with temporary license plate 997-636 T. The shooting happened around 11:47 p.m. on the parkway near Exit 17 eastbound.

The soldier was from Troop L, which covers Long Island, Burton said. The spokesman said he did not yet have additional details, such as whether the attacker was also injured.
