At least 20 people were killed in a series of Israeli military strikes on the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, medics said.

Eight people were killed in the attack on the Salateen district of northern Beit Lahiya, where Gaza’s health ministry said at least 93 people were killed or missing in an Israeli airstrike that hit a multi-storey house on Tuesday.

The US described this attack as “horrific”.

There was no comment from Israel regarding either attack.

The Gaza emergency service said its operations had come to a halt due to Israel’s more than three-week offensive on northern Gaza. Israel says its campaign is to destroy Hamas, the Palestinian militant group whose fighters have regrouped in the region in a year-long war.

The Israeli army sent tanks to Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoun and Jabalia, the largest of Gaza’s eight historic camps and the focus of the new military offensive.

Meanwhile, at least seven Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on southern and central Gaza early Wednesday, medics said. An Israeli attack killed five people and injured others near a clinic in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, medics and residents said.

According to Israeli records, 1,200 people died and more than 250 hostages were captured and taken to Gaza in Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The Gaza health ministry announced that the number of deaths in Israel’s retaliatory air and ground attack on Gaza exceeded 43,000.
