Brookwood Baptist Medical Center NICU lifts family spirits with Halloween costumes for young patients

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Brookwood Baptist Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is doing its best to lift families’ spirits this fall.

This week, they prepared costumes for dozens of newborn babies for Halloween. It’s an annual tradition that always brings a smile to families who sometimes spend weeks in the NICU.

“It was fun. I wasn’t expecting this because of course no mom expects to spend any holidays in the NICU, so this makes it that much more joyful. When you spend many days and nights here just looking after your little one, it becomes your home away from home,” said mom Emily Gomez.

This is also something many staff look forward to. The team tries to design costumes for patients based on their families or personalities. This year, staff dressed Gomez’s newborn as Frida Kahlo to celebrate her Spanish heritage.

“It’s really fun to see them participate and enjoy it. It’s so fun to see all the costumes and how much work they put into them. Here we can tell that they truly care and love them,” Gomez said.
