Minnesota gang members charged with string of murders in federal crackdown – Twin Cities

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A federal grand jury has indicted 11 alleged members of a Minneapolis street gang on charges including murder, conspiracy and drug trafficking, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Unsealed court records show some of the alleged gang members were charged for their roles in seven shootings that left five people dead. Five people were charged with murder by firearm, while all 11 defendants were charged with conspiracy.

The charges are part of a federal gang bust announced in 2023 that ensnared dozens of members or associates of several Minneapolis gangs. With Wednesday’s announcement, more than 90 people have been charged with gang-related crimes since the operation began, prosecutors said.

Alleged members of the Lows gang are also accused of trafficking fentanyl and possessing illegal weapons.

“The Lows are an extraordinarily violent criminal street gang that has terrorized north Minneapolis for almost 20 years. “The Lows gang has long sought to dominate large swaths of our city through threats and violence (shootings and murder),” said U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger. “My office will continue to respond to gang violence by treating it as organized criminal activity. “This indictment is an important step in dismantling a violent street gang that was devastating families and communities in north Minneapolis.”

Luger’s office built its operation targeting the gangs under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute. Anti-corruption law is used to target organized crime.

In Minnesota, gang-related crimes have traditionally been tried on an individual basis rather than RICO cases, Luger said. He added that in recent years his office has changed its approach and begun filing cases against criminal organizations involving individual gang members.

Earlier this month, three more people charged in connection with the federal gang bust were convicted under the RICO statute.
