‘Information leak’ suspected after local iPhone thefts

After arresting six people over a four-day period, Troy police said Wednesday they suspect an information leak led to a spate of iPhone thefts through customers’ doors.

On Monday, officers with the Troy Police Department’s Directed Patrol Unit located a suspect accused of stealing iPhone packages delivered to area homes. Officers followed him to Sterling Heights, where they saw him allegedly stealing a package, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. Authorities arrested the suspect and found the package in his vehicle, along with two other packages allegedly stolen from addresses in Utica and Southfield.

On Tuesday, the Directed Patrol Unit located another suspect accused of similar crimes and stopped his vehicle in West Bloomfield with the assistance of other agencies, the social media post said. 5 iPhones were found in the vehicle and the police arrested 4 people in the vehicle.

Then on Thursday, authorities identified another suspect wearing a jacket and hat with the FedEx logo. Officers allegedly saw the man, later identified as Jose Junior Rosario, 34, of New York, wandering around a home for several hours and eventually approaching the front porch some time after the package was delivered.

Police said when Rosario arrived, the homeowner had already received her package but left her Mac Pro laptop on the porch. The item was in its packaging and the homeowner planned to return it to the retailer, officials said.

Allegedly, the suspect took his laptop and fled the area. Police said they followed, eventually making a traffic stop and finding 16 new iPhones and an iPad inside the vehicle, all still in their original boxes.

Rosario was arrested and charged with five counts of mail larceny and driving with a revoked license. He was arraigned Friday in Oakland County 52-4 District Court, where his bond was set at $150,000.

Police were unable to identify the other suspects.

Troy police said they suspect “an information leak at the shipping company or cell phone service provider due to multiple unrelated suspects having direct knowledge of expected iPhone deliveries.”

The latest arrests follow the arrest of a man on October 15. Man wearing Amazon vest Authorities said the man also stole several iPhones left at customers’ doors.

Police recommend iPhone customers require a signature upon delivery or pick up their phone at a retail location.
