Fremont County Boys and Girls Club is trying to buy the Post Office building on Macon Avenue – Canon City Daily Record

If all the pieces fall into the right place at the right time, the Boys & Girls Club of Fremont County will open its doors at 505 Macon Ave. in the near future. He hopes to purchase the Post Office building at.

The Boys & Girls Club, located at 129 N. Fourth Street, has a for sale sign on its building, but rest assured, the Club isn’t closing its doors, it’s just ready to open a new one.

CEO Eric Thompson said the Post Office was under contract with the Club but reminded the community that the proposed acquisition was not a done deal. It is currently contingent on the sale of the existing Fourth Street building. Listed for $582,500.

“A few different factors pushed us to move away from where we are now and start getting a bigger place that would have everything under one roof,” Thompson said. “…At this point, it’s kind of a Hail Mary.”

Jeff and Connie Mueller, the former owners of the Fourth Avenue building, rented the facility to the Boys & Girls Club for many years and supported the club, Thompson said. The couple collected rent from the club for many years and donated most of it.

The club signed a two-year purchase agreement with the Mueller family and completed the sale in February after receiving a $500,000 infrastructure grant from the Colorado Opioid Reduction Council.

The Fourth Street building consists of more than 6,300 square feet of space with a downtown parking garage and outdoor patio. The Macon Boulevard property is approximately 13,000 square feet.

On June 6, 2011, the Fremont County Boys and Girls Club opened its doors to middle school-age youth in Cañon City with six children in attendance. Today, the year-round club offers after-school care for children ages 5-12 at the Cañon Research School, Monday through Friday and all day on Fridays when there is no school. Youth clubs are open Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 9 p.m., and an after-school club for teens ages 13 and up is open from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 129 N Fourth St. It is open at.

“We offer all evidence-based programs,” Thompson said. “We provide a structured environment. This isn’t a Onesie Room, even from the 5-year-old level – there’s homework help, there’s STEM and art, and National has all these evidence-based programs we have access to that teach social/emotional wellbeing, self-confidence, life skills, how to deal with bullies; Many valuable, useful and applicable skills for young people.”

He said parents were starting to notice that staff were doing more than just playing ball with kids after school, which might explain the Club’s steady growth.

We currently have 307 registered members, excluding guests. Approximately 450-500 children enter the club’s doors every year.

There are currently four full-time paid staff and nine part-time employees, including Thompson.

More youth means more staff, longer hours and a larger facility. The board considered expanding the existing building, but the cost estimate was $2 million. 505 Macon Ave. his building was listed for $1,335,000.

Dettner reminds the public that the club has two separate sources of money from which it operates. One is marked for actual operating costs and the other is marked for physical structure only.

Funding for the proposed new facility is not an issue, as the club uses grants and other financing tools.

“Operating costs are where we need support from the community to keep the doors open, to keep youth off the streets, to provide parents with after-school options for their young children or older children,” Thompson said.

Each year, the club solicits funds from its donors, community members, and businesses for operations, events, and activities. The club does not receive funding from the national Boys & Girls Club organization.

Fremont Arts Center It currently leases the Post Office, but its lease expires at the end of December. The board of directors is looking for its new and permanent home. The board has been in contact with Fremont County officials regarding financial support and will submit a formal “request” to the City of Cañon on Monday. UnbridledACTS, which owns the post office, is hosting a Matching Fund for FCA as it transitions to a new location. UnbridledACTS will match $1 to $25,000 for a total goal of $50,000 by December.
