A women’s shelter will be built in Mahalle Mahallesi

The City of Edmonton is one step closer to building 19 temporary housing units for women.

On Wednesday, Edmonton city council’s executive committee agreed to sell land in the Quarters neighborhood near downtown to the Edmonton City Center Church Collaborative (E4C) for $1,000.

“They have been a great neighbor and their new building will continue to serve Edmontonians that way, but they will also be bringing in office administrative staff, which will add a lot of activity and vibrancy to the area,” Ward O- said. day’s Coun. Anne Stevenson said at the town hall.

The land next to Kinistinaw Park is valued at approximately $3 million. It also includes the Joseph Reed Residence, which is listed on Edmonton’s historic resource inventory.

The 1912 building does not have an official name and is not under protection.

E4C plans to demolish the building to make way for new shelters and affordable housing. The project will also be the organization’s new headquarters, where 100 employees work.

“We understand that you want to be part of a community and you want to have eyes on the park,” said E4C CEO Barbara Spencer. “We want the community and the elders at the Chinese Elders Lodge to feel really comfortable walking out their front doors.”

The project is also expected to spur more development in the Neighborhoods, where the city has spent nearly $100 million on infrastructure such as nearby parks and an LRT stop.

E4C will decide whether to continue construction early next year.
