Woman died, man seriously injured when train crashed into SUV in Bessemer

A woman was killed and a man was seriously injured when the driver of an SUV tried to pass a train at the Bessemer railroad crossing Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Bessemer police Det. Justin Burmeister said the incident happened at 32nd Street and Carolina Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

The SUV was traveling westbound on 32nd Street and attempted to pass with the passing arms down and lights flashing. The vehicle was struck by a southbound Norfolk Southern train.

Both people were ejected from the SUV. It took a mile for the train to stop.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, 50 meters away from the gate. The male was taken to UAB Hospital.

Their names were not disclosed.
