Hyderabad:

The Telangana government on Wednesday banned the production, storage and sale of mayonnaise prepared from raw eggs for one year with immediate effect, following complaints that it was the suspected cause of food poisoning.

The State Food Safety Commissioner has issued an order to this effect.

“According to observations made during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public, mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected of causing food poisoning in numerous cases that have occurred in the last few months,” the order said.

Mayonnaise (or Mayo) is a thick, creamy sauce made by emulsifying egg yolks with oil, often flavored with vinegar or lemon juice.

It is often used as a garnish or sauce in sandwiches, salads, appetizers, snacks, shawarma and various dishes.
