US warns Israel over Gaza aid as deadline approaches

In a briefing to the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday, UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland said he witnessed “a terrible humanitarian nightmare” during his recent visit to Gaza.

He said the northern Palestinian territory has received almost no humanitarian aid since early October, when the Israeli army launched a ground offensive in the Jabalia region, which it said was aimed at preventing Hamas fighters from regrouping there.

The operation killed scores of Palestinians, caused mass displacement, and led to the closure of basic services, including water wells and medical facilities.

The US ambassador said reports of children going without food for days in Jabalia made him think about how he saw a girl starve to death almost three decades ago.

Ms. Thomas-Greenfield said the Biden administration had made clear to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel must immediately intervene in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and that the United States “rejects any Israeli effort to starve Palestinians in Jabalia or anywhere else.” he said he expressed.

“The United States has made clear that Israel must allow food, medicine and other supplies into all of Gaza, especially the north, especially as winter comes, and protect the workers who distribute them,” he added.

Mr Danon told the Council that Israel was “working intensively to provide humanitarian aid”.

“The problem is not the flow of aid. It is Hamas that smuggles, stores or sells supplies to fuel its terror machine while civilians in Gaza are neglected. “Israel is committed to working with our partners to deliver aid to those in need,” he added.

On October 13, the Biden administration told Netanyahu’s government that Israel must take action within 30 days to take a series of concrete measures to increase aid supplies, citing US laws that can ban military aid to countries that block US humanitarian aid.

These included allowing at least 350 trucks a day to pass through all Israeli-controlled Gaza crossings and immediately ending the “isolation” of the north.

According to published data, Unrwa, externalOnly 852 aid trucks crossed into Gaza this month, compared to nearly 3,000 in September. A total of 502 people have entered since the letter, and an average of 35 trucks passed through each day between 14 and 29 October.

Meanwhile, Israel’s own data says a total of 1,386 trucks passed between October 1 and 28, external – Daily average is 49. It is stated that 670 truckloads of aid are waiting to be collected from Gaza.
