GREEN BAY (WLUK) — An affordable housing complex on Green Bay’s east side opened its doors Tuesday.

Bay City Lofts is a collaboration between Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan and tenant Gorman & Company. Located on University Boulevard, the project features 48 mixed-income apartments and eight townhomes.

40 of the apartment units are income restricted, meaning they are available to households earning 30% to 60% of the area median income. Meanwhile, eight units are market-rate and not subject to income restrictions.

“This means a new community in Green Bay that is affordable for people making about 60% of the county median income, which is maybe $40,000 for an individual and about $55,000 for a family of four,” explains the president. Ted Matkom. Gorman & Company Wisconsin market.

He believes having tenants with diverse incomes is a powerful thing.

There are people in this building who make 30% of the county median income — making maybe $20,000 a year — versus people who have market-rate, unrestricted income. It’s a mix of a wide range of incomes living in this building, and I think that’s a strength of the building in terms of the diversity of residents.

Matkom said the original site of Bay City Lofts was supposed to be on Military Street, but when that didn’t work out, the project shifted gears.

“The city stood up on its own two feet and found another location for us, rezoned this space that had been vacant for years, and helped us develop this space in the fairly tight time frame we had,” Matkom said.

Amenities available to Bay City Lofts residents include a community room, fitness center, and on-site offices for LSS. Officials say LSS will provide supportive services to ensure residents have the tools and resources they need to thrive.
