Rangers’ Matt Rempe fights Capitals heavyweight on first shift

Matt Rempe took his first shift with the Rangers after being called up from AHL Hartford, dropping the gloves to an old foe from his minor league hockey days.

The Rangers’ heavyweights tackled Dylan McIlrath at center ice with less than three minutes to go in the game against the Capitals.

The two traded heavy blows before knocking each other’s helmets off as the punches continued.

McIlrath eventually took Rempe to the ground, drawing cheers from the Capital One Arena crowd.

After they got up from the ground and the linesmen separated them, Rempe was seen saying something to McIlrath.

The two have a history with each other that dates back to their days in the American Hockey League, when McIlrath was with the Capitals’ farm team, the Hershey Bears, and Rempe was with Hartford.

Rempe was sent to the AHL by the Rangers last week. but was quickly brought back to the NHL.

The fight was Rempe’s first of the season.

Rempe has become a cult hero among Rangers fans for his fearless courage and physical style of hockey against some of the NHL’s heavyweights last season.

The Rangers lost 5-3 to the Capitals on Tuesday night in Rempe’s NHL return.
