Court documents detail the motive for the shooting at Arizona Mills Mall; 3 arrested

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Three people, including a teenager, have been arrested more than a month after a shooting at the building. Arizona Mills Mall’s food court.

Tempe police say a 16-year-old suspect faces aggravated assault, endangerment, disorderly conduct and unlawful discharge of a firearm for the attack.

Additionally, 19-year-old Gabriel Victor Garcia was arrested for aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, endangerment and unlawful eviction.

Police also said 22-year-old Marvin Hooks was arrested on a charge of conspiracy in connection with the alleged crime.

Court documents obtained by Arizona Family showed gunshots were found on the ceiling, wall, signs and columns of the dining area, causing and spreading approximately $500 worth of damage. Great panic among those who go to shopping malls.

No injuries were reported.

Police said the teenager was identified as the attacker with a gun and Garcia was identified as the attacker with a rifle.

Police said the teen confessed to his involvement in the shooting. He said the teen first considered fighting the victim or hitting him with a gun, but decided to shoot instead, according to arrest documents.

He said that while he was walking around the shopping mall, the victims pointed guns at him and shot him before, but they did not inform the police because they were a group of seven people.

Court documents said the teen said there was an ongoing fight between the victims that included the shooting of Hooks’ home earlier this year, which was confirmed by a Phoenix police report obtained at the time.

In an interview with investigators, Hook initially said he didn’t know who the shooter was, but later identified the shooters as the teenager and “Vic,” who police said was Garcia. But Hook said he was “just there to get a hat and ran away when the suspect was shot.”

Hook explained that he didn’t know his “enemies” were at the mall until later and “expressed his anger over his mother’s house being hit.” Police said Hook admitted he wanted to retaliate but knew he couldn’t because he was on parole.

As the interview continued, Hook said he had already seen the victim wandering around and “wanted to fight them” because they set his house on fire. But this prevented him from confronting the shooting when it occurred.

He then talked about having flashbacks and said he would ask them to fight, according to the documents.

All three suspects were arrested and sent to prison.
