US offers $5 million reward for 1994 plane bombing blamed on Hezbollah

PANAMA CITY, Panama (AFP) — The United States on Tuesday offered a $5 million reward for information about a 1994 plane bombing in Panama that killed 21 people and was blamed on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Unfortunately, Chiricanas’ Flight 901 exploded in mid-air after taking off from an airport in the Caribbean state of Colon.

Everyone on board, mostly members of the Central American nation’s Jewish community, was killed, including three Americans.

In the statement published by the US State Department and Washington’s embassy in Panama, it was said: “The US Director of National Intelligence has assessed that Hezbollah is responsible for the bombing of AC 901.”

The statement said, “After the attack, it was determined that the suspect who carried the bomb to the plane was the person named Ali Hawa Jamal, who also lost his life in the bombing.”

The offer was welcomed by the relatives of the victims.

Ana Karina Smith Cain, whose grandfather died in the attack, said in a statement to AFP, “It is extremely important to know that the US and the world justice system have not forgotten this case.”

“It was an extremely tragic day filled with indescribable pain for the families of the victims. “We hope that one day those responsible will be tried,” he said.

A war between Hezbollah and Israel broke out last month after almost a year of cross-border fire.

Israel has stepped up airstrikes against the Iran-backed group and sent ground forces to Lebanon.
