Dodgers vs Yankees score, live updates: Los Angeles looks to sweep the World Series in Game 4 in New York

The New York Yankees have their backs against the wall in New York on Tuesday night, while the Los Angeles Dodgers look to complete their first World Series sweep since 2012 to capture a second championship under manager Dave Roberts. It’s been a dismal series for the Yankees’ big bat; Aaron Judge batted just .083 in the first three games of this series, going 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts. He’s not the only Yankee struggling — the Bronx Bombers are batting just .186 as a team in the series, but both Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto are swinging the bat well.

If you’re a Dodgers fan, Game 4 of the Freddie Freeman Show could be Los Angeles’ crowning achievement for the former Atlanta star, who became the third player to hit a home run in the first three games of the World Series, joining Hank Bauer. (1958, Yankees) and Barry Bonds (2002, Giants). Freeman has appeared in the last five World Series games dating back to the 2021 World Series win with the Braves.

Luis Gil (1-0, 4.50 ERA, 4.0 IP, 3 K, 3 BB, 2024 postseason) is starting for the Yankees with the season on the line, and the Dodgers are signing Ben Casparius (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 4.1 IP, 4 K, 2 BB), first pitch is set for 8:08 PM ET at Yankee Stadium on Fox.

  • What is the history of teams going 3-0 in the World Series?

In short, it’s not good if you’re a Yankees fan.

A total of 24 teams took 3-0 leads in the World Series. 21 of these teams finished the series in Game 4, while the other three won the championship in Game 5. The Yankees would make history by sending this series back to Los Angeles.

Looking at a broader history of 3-0 wins, teams with this advantage won the 7-game series 39 of 40 wins. You probably already know the exception: The Boston Red Sox comeback against the Yankees in 2004 depended on a steal by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. So for the Yankees to pull this off would mean a complete reversal of luck.

Only one team has been able to tie the series after falling behind 3-0: the team the 2020 Houston Astros nearly won against the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS. The Rays went on to win Game 7.

  • Why are the Dodgers starting Ben Casparius?

The team, on the verge of winning the World Series, adds 25-year-old rookie Ben Casparius, who played a total of three times in the regular season. He will be the opener for the Dodgers’ bullpen game against Yankees rookie Luis Gil.

This is the Dodgers’ fourth postseason bullpen game, and they won two of their first three. This is despite Landon Knack, another rookie, who has been solid in 12 regular season starts. The Dodgers do this because they prefer to lean on their bullpen rather than start a starting pitcher they don’t trust.

The Dodgers only have three of their starting pitchers, as injuries to their rotation could either point to significant structural problems in their organization or some sort of “Homer at the Bat” style curse. Some starting pitchers unavailable this postseason due to injuries: Tyler Glasnow, Gavin Stone, Clayton Kershaw, Bobby Miller, River Ryan, Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin.

  • Yankees added Giancarlo Stanton but did not move Aaron Judge

The Yankees are making a strange adjustment with their backs against the wall. Their lineup today includes regular cleanup hitter Giancarlo Stanton with No. 5 hitter Jazz Chisholm Jr. replaced it with; Game 3’s No. 6 hitter Anthony Volpe and No. 7 hitter Anthony Rizzo also changed places. Both are alternations of left and right hitters

Stanton has been spectacular this postseason, scoring the Yankees’ biggest hit of this series in Game 1 with his two-run homer. Aaron Judge, who is 6-for-43 with 20 strikeouts this postseason, still ranks third behind Juan Soto.

  • Starting lineups for match 4

Ben Casparius and Luis Gil will be the starting pitchers.
