WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – After seeing the devastation Helene wreaked on Western North Carolina, students and staff at a local high school knew they had to do something.

The Hoggard community collected donations to be sent west to Zionville in Watauga County.

The Beta Club was responsible for collecting food, the student council collected hygiene products, and the National Honor Society collected cleaning supplies.

They worked together to collect other necessities like blankets and socks.

John T Hoggard High School would like to thank Coastal Carrier Moving and Storage Company for donating boxes and rolls of tape for shipping supplies.

Students were happy to lend a helping hand.

“I mean it’s been amazing, our clubs love volunteering for the community and we’re very involved in the community as well, but we don’t have a lot of things at Hoggard that we can see the impact of. But you can go inside the trailer and see the boxes in here and it’s really cool to see the impact that the students have been able to make from our clubs,” he said. said Beta Club president Lexa McCorcle.

“I am so happy and grateful that people can come together and do what is best for our community,” said Lilia Hartwick, Beta Club vice president.

Some members of the student council have a message; “On behalf of Hoggard student council, we are delighted with the contributions made by our student body. Go to Viks!”

The donations were packed into boxes Tuesday and will be loaded onto a trailer that will be brought west next week.
