Repeat offender pleads guilty to multiple crimes

Jeffery Morrison pleaded guilty to two felonies in Judge Toni Terrett’s courtroom Tuesday. He faced charges of attempting to escape from prison and attempted aggravated assault on a police officer.

Morrison was represented by attorney Yemi Kings. Branon Southerland represented the prosecution.

The incident, which occurred while Morrison was incarcerated, occurred in September 2022 and involved Morrison attacking a guard who was trying to refill his water bottle, Southerland said. At the time, Morrison was incarcerated on aggravated assault charges.

Morrison allegedly started a physical altercation with the police officer, biting him, tearing his clothes and breaking his skin. The officer has permanent scarring from the incident, Southerland said.

Even though the jury had been selected and seated, Morrison said Tuesday morning that he wanted to change his plea to guilty.

Morrison also faces an unrelated charge for assault on a police officer. These charges are pending.

Terrett accepted Morrison’s plea and set a sentencing date of November 15. Morrison faces up to 35 years in prison for the charges.
