Man sentenced to prison for shooting and killing daughter’s boyfriend in Bradenton

A Bradenton father was sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly failing to participate. shot his daughter’s boyfriend during an argument, according to court records.

Charles Heaven, 50, entered a plea to a lesser charge of murder with a firearm on Oct. 24 and was convicted more than two years after the fatal shooting occurred, according to court records. He was given credit for time served and was prohibited from contacting the victim’s family.

Heaven was initially charged with second-degree murder with a firearm, according to court records.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Manatee County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting at an apartment at 3214 54 Drive E. on the evening of Sept. 20, 2022. Heaven, then 48, had arrived at her 24-year-old daughter’s house while her boyfriend was there.

According to previous reports, Heaven and her boyfriend Keith Smith (30) had an argument outside the apartment. It was then that Heaven reportedly shot Smith in the upper torso.

Deputies assisted EMS in treating Smith before he was transferred to Blake Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Heaven fled the scene but turned himself into law enforcement custody about two days later, according to court records.
