Neighbor saving child from drowning seen on doorbell camera

An Illinois man saved his neighbor’s drowning child in a moment captured on doorbell camera footage.

In the video, the child’s mother, Stephanie George, is seen running towards her neighbor’s house, carrying her 7-year-old son.

He told Chicago ABC affiliate WLS-TV that George’s son, Sebastian, has a rare genetic condition called Cornelia de Lange syndrome and eats through a feeding tube. On Saturday evening, a piece of chicken that wasn’t mixed well enough got stuck in Sebastian’s throat, and Sebastian immediately realized he was choking.

“I grabbed my phone to call 911, but as I reached for my phone, unlocked it, typed in the number, and tried to assess Sebastian, it was already blue. That’s when I started to panic,” she said.

Fearing it would take too long for emergency responders to arrive, George grabbed his son and carried him across the street to his neighbor Gary Hutchinson’s house.

Gary Hutchinson

In those moments recorded on the doorbell camera, Hutchinson is seen opening the door, then placing Sebastian on his knee and gently patting his back until the stuck food comes out.

Hutchinson said he is trained in CPR and is grateful to be able to help his neighbors in their time of need.

“I did exactly as I was taught; kept the airway open, put the baby on my leg, gently pressed on my upper back,” she said. “They taught us in class that you know when you need it.”

Although George was shaken by the incident, he said Sebastian recovered quickly and has been fine ever since.

“Things could have been a lot worse,” he said.
