Driver faces manslaughter charges in Northeast El Paso crash

A driver was allegedly arrested manslaughter by drunkenness has been charged in connection with a crash that killed another man at a Northeast El Paso traffic intersection over the weekend.

Kevin Anthony Meacham, 29, of Chaparral, New Mexico, is charged with the death of Ruben Felipe Acosta, 51, of El Paso, in a crash late Friday night, Oct. 25, at the intersection of Gateway North Boulevard and Sun Valley Drive. El Paso police said in a news release.

Police said an investigation by the Special Traffic Investigation Unit determined that Meacham was speeding in a brown 2017 Nissan Titan as he exited the Patriot Highway at 10:56 p.m. Meacham was on Gateway North Boulevard when he tried to make a right turn at Sun Valley Drive.

Meacham was unable to make the turn due to his speed, and the truck struck a silver 2011 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Acosta, which was stopped at traffic signals in the westbound lane of Sun Valley Drive. Police said speed and alcohol are suspected to have caused the crash.

Acosta later died in the hospital where he was taken due to his injuries.

Meacham was arrested on a charge of intoxication manslaughter and remained in the El Paso County Jail City Center on a $150,000 bond as of Monday, October 28. Jail records show Meacham was arrested by El Paso police in August on public intoxication charges.

The Gateway North/Sun Valley crash was the 55th traffic-related fatality in El Paso this year, according to Police Department figures; Last year, there were 62 deaths in the same period.
