The coroner has identified the driver of a NAPA Auto Parts van who died after running a red light into an intersection in Libertyville, causing a three-vehicle crash.

An autopsy Monday revealed that Neal Raffeld, 77, of Mundelein, died of blunt force injuries after being struck by a vehicle, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Libertyville Police Department and Libertyville Fire Department responded to the intersection of Winchester Road and Butterfield Road in Libertyville around 11:46 a.m. Friday.

Libertyville Police Department Sgt. Dusan Racic said officers received a report of an accident in which multiple vehicles were injured.

Officers arrived to find a crash involving a Chevrolet SUV, a NAPA Auto Parts van and a UPS box truck.

The minibus, which was apparently destroyed by a UPS truck, suffered heavy damage.

Raffeld, the driver of the NAPA van, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Matt Goze said Saturday.

Raffeld was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to the scene to conduct a full crash investigation.

The intersection of Butterfield Road and Winchester Road has been completely closed for several hours. It remained closed until 16.00

Banek said preliminary investigation showed that the NAPA van Raffeld was driving was stopped at traffic lights.

Banek said the van entered the intersection at a red light for an unknown reason and was hit by a UPS truck. The two vehicles then collided with the SUV.

The crash remains under investigation by the Libertyville Police Department and MCAT.
