Odisha custodial assault case: Cops to wear body cameras in Bhubaneswar police stations

The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate in Odisha has asked all staff at the reception desk of the police station to wear body cameras to check the behavior of both police and visitors.

Following the allegations, the police commissioner made this move. sexual harassment of a woman and torture of an officer by the police at the Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar.

Also, recently, a woman was alleged to have behaved inappropriately with the police at Khandagiri police station.

Some police stations in Bhubaneswar implemented the directive on Sunday, a police officer said.

To ensure accountability and transparency, Commissioner of Police S Dev Datta Singh has instructed all staff at the reception desk of the police station to wear body cameras.

The police commissioner’s office tweeted on Sunday that it would monitor police behavior towards visitors and bring accountability.

Stating that police personnel have been sensitized to be polite, understanding and law-abiding in their dealings, the institution added that this initiative will allow the police to record the inappropriate behavior of some visitors.

“Body cameras will improve our response by sending real-time alerts to the control room. Audio-visual recordings will be retained for at least a month. We are in the process of upgrading existing body cameras to be state-of-the-art,” X post added.

It was claimed that people who came to the police station were not treated appropriately many times. At the same time, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Pinak Mishra said the complainants also allegedly misbehaved with police personnel at police stations.

To check this, body cameras have been installed at different police stations to record conversations, the official said.
