HPD Arrests Man Accused of Shooting at Police Officers in Kalihi

Police shot the suspect multiple times. He was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

Honolulu police arrested a 47-year-old man accused of opening fire on officers in Kalihi early Sunday.

Officers spotted a Honda CRV committing a traffic violation near Aloha Stadium around 1:30 p.m., Honolulu Police Department Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said at a news conference. Officers determined the vehicle had been stolen from Sandy Beach on October 14th.

The vehicle was seen traveling eastbound on Middle Street in Kalihi and turning onto Ahonui Street. Officers stopped the driver near Kuhio Parking Terrace.

The driver fled on foot and shot at two officers, Logan said. Police then shot the suspect multiple times.

The officers involved were from the crime reduction unit, which does not currently have body-worn cameras, Police Chief Joe Logan said at a news conference Sunday. Could be the whole video Appeared on Hawaii News Now. (Screenshot/Hawaii News Now/2024)

The suspect, whose name was identified as Blane Apostadiro, was transported to the hospital in serious condition. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, unauthorized control of a driven vehicle and other crimes, according to HPD records.

A ghost gun was seized at the scene.

Police also arrested a 34-year-old female passenger on suspicion of trespassing into a motor vehicle. Logan said he has multiple prior convictions.

The officers were deemed to be on administrative leave. No other injuries were reported.

This is the sixth officer-involved shooting on Oahu, compared to three during the same period last year.

The investigation continues.
