Parked cars blocking roads in Belfast could be prosecuted

DUP Councilor Ruth Brooks said a letter had been sent to residents on some of the worst-hit streets informing them of the plan and reminding them to park “with care”.

“If the issue is not resolved, we will be asking the Department for Infrastructure and the PSNI to do their part and take action,” he says.

He told BBC News NI that some narrow streets that traditionally had one or two cars could now have more than one car per household.

“As a result residents can’t always park in front of their homes and that causes problems; commuters also end up on residential streets because that’s where they can get on the bus route – those kinds of things have an impact.”

Brooks says residents also become frustrated when their bins are regularly overlooked.

“Inconsiderate parking is one of the biggest problems that keeps garbage trucks off the streets,” he said.

“The municipality has no enforcement powers; they cannot force residents to park their cars correctly.”
