Funeral home director arrested after 18 decomposed bodies were found during evacuation

DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) – Sunday afternoon, the owner of Johnson Funeral and Cremation Services in Douglas was arrested following an investigation.

According to Douglas Now, Chris Johnson was arrested and taken into custody by authorities at his home.

There were many institutions in attendance Saturday night at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Services in Douglas.

According to Douglas Now, during the evacuation at the funeral home, 18 bodies were found in various states of decomposition along with two pets, a dog and a cat.

On Saturday night, the sheriff’s office told WALB that a search warrant had been obtained, but they did not disclose the reason for the search.

However, on Sunday, it was reported by Douglas Now that the Douglas Fire Department hazmat unit helped retrieve the bodies at the scene and left the funeral home at 10pm on Saturday.

Several onlookers told WALB they saw officers from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) at the funeral home.

We’ve reached out to GBI for more information and are waiting to hear back.
