Demonstration drive in Ottawa: 17-year-old cited for driving 188 km/h on Hwy. 417

A 17-year-old driver from Ottawa was caught speeding approximately 90 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 417.

Ontario Provincial Police said they stopped the driver, who only had a novice G2 license, around 6 p.m. Saturday evening.

Police caught the driver going 188 km/h, even though the posted speed limit in urbanized parts of Ottawa is 100 km/h.

“This is a phone call no parent wants to receive. ‘Your child has been arrested, your vehicle has been impounded,'” OPP said on X.

The driver was charged with stunt driving, dangerous driving and improper use of the HOV lane.

In Ontario, stunt and dangerous driving offenses require immediate driver’s license suspension for 30 days and vehicle impoundment for 14 days.

Convicted drivers can be fined up to $10,000, six demerit points and imprisoned for up to six months.
